The AquaAirBag
(Patent pending) is a floatation aid designed specifically for swimmers caught in rip currents, but could be used for water safety in general.

When you are caught in a rip current the common instructions are basically: Remain calm. (Easier said than done)

Swim out with the current.

Swim down along the beach.

Swim back in where the rip current no longer exists.

If you have something that floats, this is easier to do. However, many people do not feel comfortable with the currently available Personal Floatation Devices’ and simply choose not to use them. I have designed a floatation aid that fits in an armband, small, light and inexpensive.

Many people wear armbands like this to hold their music players while exercising. This is how the AquaAirBag (Patent pending) works: When you feel that you are in danger, you grab the whistle and pull up and out.

Put the mouthpiece in your mouth, then while swimming preferably on your back, you inflate the balloon. The mouthpiece is made of plastic so you can bite into it without damaging your teeth. This is important because you may be panicking; remember you might think you are going to drown at that moment.

I found that it only takes 2 full breathes to provide enough air to allow you to float on it. I recommend that you put more air in and then let some out after to be safe. The second picture, letting air out of the check valve, shows me standing on the sea floor. When you do this, the balloon will probably be under water.

The balloon in these pictures has about twice as much air as it needs. You can let air out by pressing the check valve in with the metal band that is wrapped on the lanyard closest to the whistle. The reason you do this is simply that the more air that you have in the balloon, the harder it is to handle. If you let too much out, just blow some more in.

When you have optimized your buoyancy, you can tuck it under your arm like a football. Now that you are stable, you can blow the whistle to get help.
